Opinion: Should The Witcher 3 be Game of the Year 5

The Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine marked the end of Geralt of Rivia’s story and the conclusion of The Witcher 3, however, CD Projekt Red’s CEO has confirmed that a brand-new Witcher game is in the cards but it won’t be titled The Witcher 4.

CD Projekt Red’s CEO Adam Kiciński in an interview with Polish business and financial website, Bankier.pl, when asked about the future of the Witcher series, specifically in regards to a possible Witcher 4, stated, “The first three Witchers were by definition a trilogy, so we simply could not name the next game The Witcher 4,” said Kiciński.

CD Projekt Red’s biggest forthcoming title is currently, Cyberpunk 2077, the studios’ maiden voyage into the world of first-person sci-fi games. Kiciński further continued, adding, “This does not mean, of course, that we will leave the world of The Witcher, created by us for over a dozen years. The Witcher is one of two franchises on which to build in the future activities of the company. Today, unfortunately, I can not reveal anything more.”

Kiciński ended the interview with, “there will come a time”, referring to when CD Projekt Red will be let loose details surrounding the next Witcher title. Interestingly, this news comes a week after the announcement regarding R. Talsorian Games’ plan to release a tabletop game based on the Witcher franchise.

Cyberpunk 2077 was shown off to select members of the press during a private E3 2018 showing in Los Angelas, earlier in June.  The game itself will be a departure in terms of setting, however, the title promises to deliver the same levels of rich RPG gameplay and storytelling found within the Witcher games. The game was first announced all the way back in 2012, with a teaser trailer for the game released in 2013. A neat easter-egg in The Witcher 3 even hinted at a possible connection between the world of the Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077’s futuristic setting.
