Spider-Man: Far From Home Sets Tuesday Launch Record

Taking advantage of the fresh summer season, Spider-Man: Far From Home has smashed the Tuesday box office launch record.

This web-slinging superhero flick has been out for one day, and it’s already generated $39.2 million USD from 4,634 North American locations. That’s a casually-set record for Tuesday releases, and it’s dethroning – surprise, surprise – 2012’s Andrew Garfield-led The Amazing Spider-Man, with $35 million.

Marvel’s latest movie, and the cap to their climactic Phase 3 line of films, is expected to earn between $125 and $150 million USD during its first six days in theatres. Even the lower side of that estimate would be a step up from Tom Holland’s first standalone, 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, which debuted with $117 million over its three-day window.

Spider-Man: Far From Home began its international rollout last weekend, launching in China, Japan and Hong Kong, where it’s collected $150 million to date. The first Holland-led Spidey standalone became a huge box office hit, grossing $880 million worldwide.

Far From Home comes from director Jon Watts, costing $160 million USD to produce. The 23rd Marvel movie picks up after the events of Avengers: Endgame and follows Peter Parker (Holland), who gets recruited to save the world from otherworldly threats while on a class trip to Europe. Jake Gyllenhaal joins the cast as Mysterio, while Samuel L. Jackson, Zendaya, Cobie Smulders, Jon Favreau, and Marisa Tomei all returned for the sequel. By the way, make sure you’ve seen Endgame before watching this. It’s important.

I and many others have yet to see Spider-Man: Far From Home, but judging by early impressions and CGM’s own Chris Carter’s review, the MCU ain’t out of steam yet.
