The viral co-op multiplayer hit Escape the Backrooms is finally getting some new content, so make sure your friend group is ready to face some fresh horrors.
As announced during the triple-i showcase, Escape the Backrooms is getting an “After Party” update this December, although publisher Secret Mode hasn’t announced an exact date as of now. The update will add three new levels to the game and a kind of celebratory vibe that adds a little brevity to the tense horror, with decorations, cake, and more. You can see a short tease of the update below.
But before the big update in December, Escape the Backrooms will get a selection of both paid and free cosmetics in October, letting players dress up to relieve the tension. Secret Mode also says more levels and cosmetics are planned and in development.
Escape the Backrooms has now hit over 12 million players across all platforms. The co-op game is part of a surging trend of multiplayer games we’ve seen lately: these sort of cooperative survival experiences heavily based on emergent moments and the dynamic between players. In Escape the Backrooms, you work with your partners to traverse over 30 different mind-bending levels, while evading an array of horrific monsters. One of the more interesting features of this one, though, is the proximity voice chat you use to communicate with teammates, which the entities hunting you can also hear.
You might see the obvious connection to the smash-hit film from earlier this year, Backrooms. Both the film and the game are inspired by a creepypasta about liminal spaces that dates back to 2019, and a viral YouTube short film series created by Kane Parsons.
Escape the Backrooms is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
