Batman in a Ball Pit? Yes, please!

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Preview — Meet the Bat-Family!

The LEGO series of games has always been a favourite in my household, whether it is because of the relaxed vibe, copious amounts of collectables, or the satisfying noise everything makes when it smashes. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is the latest series in the lineup, and don’t let The Dark Knight fool you, this is a LEGO game, through and through.

I was curious how TT Games would bring the LEGO humour and charm to a version of Batman that is very rooted in darkness and brooding, and a Batman property can’t go without reliving his origin story. How do you make orphaning a child family-friendly? Though I didn’t get to play the first portion of the game this time, a recap did let us know that we will relive this origin story once again, but TT Games has been sure to make it a lighter, more family-friendly version.

When talking to TT Games Cinematics Animation Director, Bob Scott, he told us a bit about the challenges of telling the story to fans of all ages, specifically about his parents’ death, “My layout artist showed it to his six-year-old daughter, and her reaction was she took her headphones off and sat down and went, ‘Poor Batman.’ So we had to like, ‘Let’s go back to put some jokes,’ in there, you know? So there’s a balance to be had.”

Voice actor behind LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight’s Batman, Shai Matheson, does a good job of making this version of the Caped Crusader feel like something more digestible for children and families. However, I feel like this isn’t a Batman I have seen before. I likened him to someone more like Superman, with an “everyone’s favourite guy” vibe.

He was charming, charismatic, and dare I even say bubbly while playing Bruce Wayne, with a slightly grittier voice when he dons the mask and cape. I’ve never found Bruce Wayne particularly likable, more cocky and smug. When I asked my partner to describe him—he is a big fan—words like “reserved” and “sometimes cold” came up. While I was well aware going into things that this would be the LEGO world version, I was still surprised to find him so personable. I can’t decide if I like it yet, and will need to play the full game to make that call.

As for what I did get to experience in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, we were given three different save files at different points in the game. First, we spent time investigating the famous Batman bad guy, Falcone, then moved to a save file to meet up with Catwoman and Robin, and finally, one more jump to meet Poison Ivy herself.

“Something about Batman mean-muggin’ while standing in a ballpit was hilarious and so quintessentially LEGO.”

For starters, jumping into the first save file was a trip. Batman is partnered up with Jim Gordon, and in true LEGO style, we needed to swap back and forth between characters to get through the level. While Batman has the Batarang for hitting items far away and taking out cameras, and Batclaw for pulling objects and launching you to new locations, Gordon has a Foam Sprayer to stop objects in their tracks and a Rebound Launcher, which I didn’t use often, but I believe it was also used to pull him up. Each character seemed to have something like that for movement

What really got me, though, was chasing Falcone through an entire funhouse as Batman and Gordon. Something about Batman mean-muggin’ while standing in a ballpit was hilarious and so quintessentially LEGO. The area was colourful and well thought-out, even if it was completely bananas. It goes to show the depth that LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will feature, moving from a nightclub to a funhouse to a kitchen and more, all in one level.

The second section offered us a look at working with Catwoman in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. Before heading off to meet The Flying Graysons at the circus, Batman has to accompany Catwoman on a heist. Though this one was a part of the storyline, heists are one of the many things to do in the open world of Gotham, and this one contained no fighting, only some puzzle-solving, before completing the job. They’ve even brought in a lock-picking mechanic, which thankfully seemed easy enough.

Once Batwoman and Catwoman headed to the circus, it became all about Batman and Robin. TT Games had to make some creative changes to Dick Grayson’s storyline to lighten the mood a bit, but I think it works for the overall game. This level focused more on platforming and timing than anything else. This is where I am very thankful for the three difficulties in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, since platforming is my nemesis.

Classic is like the original difficulty in LEGO games, which is well-suited for a more casual experience or kids and families, etc. Caped Crusader will up the ante a little, being more of a normal difficulty. Finally, for those who have been asking for it, Caped Crusader is the hardest difficulty, offering the biggest challenge in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight.

The final section I was able to play during my preview was an encounter with Poison Ivy, which was a boss fight with Batman and Robin. Here, rather than smashing and punching as I do with most LEGO games, actual mechanics were required. Ivy would go through cycles with her giant two-headed flower mount, bringing it to the ground, launching poison AOE attacks and more. The battle made use of both characters as well, which added a little extra challenge.

“LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is the latest series in the lineup, and don’t let The Dark Knight fool you, this is a LEGO game, through and through.”

I really appreciated the areas that TT Games and Warner Bros. Games had us check out, as I felt it was a well-rounded preview experience. After those three saves, we were let loose in open-world Gotham to see what else LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight had to offer. Story aside, there is always something to do in Gotham. We chatted about heists already, but in my short time running around, I found myself caught in quite a few crime-stopping moments.

Though I didn’t spend a lot of time here on my preview, I am told that not only is there plenty more to do, but TT Games snuck in a ton of Easter eggs for Batman fans to find. Scott mentioned, “I think there are a million small Easter eggs and surprises. I think if you spend even two minutes in the city, you’ll find about five of them in a fraction of a second.”

The reason I missed out on extra time in Gotham was that I really wanted to focus on the Batcave! LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight introduces the Batcave as an incredibly customizable area that will grow with you as you play through the game. This is where players will upgrade abilities for Batman and his companions, plus store all 100 costumes for seven characters, many cars and more. The Batcave features various sections to unlock, plus customization of posters, tinkering spaces, and you can even customize your Bat Signal.

I spoke at length with Bob Scott about what went into choosing things like costumes and what characters to include. He mentioned that the characters are mostly based on The Dark Knight trilogy of films, but that they needed to make sense as a LEGO title, as well:

“We wanted this to be an experience that people could enjoy with their children or their friends together, and with how it kind of goes along with the theme of the game, which is that Batman never works alone. He has a family, and it’s his family that is his redemption in the end. You know, he uses fear as a weapon, and fear doesn’t work when he comes up against somebody who has no fear. And then it’s the love of his family that saves him, you know?”

What really stood out to me during my preview was the little touches: Comedic lines pointing out the absurdity of building a random drill from pieces in the room show that TT Games is keeping the spirit of LEGO titles alive in 2026. Animations featuring giant BAMs and THWACKs on the screen keep the comic-book vibe alive. As I mentioned, there are Easter eggs galore for Batman fans, and plenty of collectables for replayability.

Though the main story is said to be only 15 hours, I have no doubt that LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will provide ample hours of LEGO goodness, especially with access to three difficulty levels to master. You don’t have to be a fan of Batman to enjoy the game either; TT Games’ LEGO titles often stand on their own, aside from their IP, and LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is no exception. The game will be fun for Batman fanatics, casual fans and anyone who just loves a good game.

One thing is for sure, two hours was not enough. This preview got me amped up for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, and I can’t wait to dive in when the game finally releases.
