Bioware shares desire to expand into, smaller, creative titles, while still working on AAA pursuits 1

In a recent interview with the studio, Bioware’s general manager Casey Hudson and Mark Darrah, the executive producer for Anthem, sat down with Game Informer to talk about Bioware’s interest in creating smaller titles, giving the AAA studio some more flexibility and creative liberty, something that is often harder to procure when it comes to larger titles, such as Anthem.

Hudson talked about how the company has been worried that larger, AAA games, such as the forthcoming Anthem will overshadow any interest in smaller games from the studio, which is why Bioware is currently looking at their options for expanding their portfolio, beyond just AAA ventures. Hudson stated, “I would like to get to a place where, yes, we’re doing our big next thing, but maybe we’re also kinda doing a few experiments,” relating to smaller games to the likes of short films, in terms of scope and ambition, going on to say, ” “There’s a lot of people here that have ideas that they want to get out that… you just don’t always want to wait for the next big thing.”

Bioware believes that larger studios should not only focus on AAA games but foster and cultivate the creation of smaller titles, using Rockstar Game’s Table Tennis title as an example, the team over at Bioware believes that smaller titles brings with it new ideas, some of which would be too risky for larger projects, making smaller games rife for creativity.

“I think there’s a middle ground. I’ve heard it called AAA indie, but, which is that sort of high production value, but still smaller scale, smaller budget. There’s only a few games that exist in that space right now. And I think there’s an opportunity for more AAA stuff to be in there,” Darrah added.

“Anthem is definitely a game where we’ve tried to be a game for the future, but I think there’s, uh, I think an opportunity for BioWare to be doing both, to be making games that are true to the corest part of our core and games that explore new parts of the audience like Anthem does,” Darrah finished.

Anthem will be available, Feburary, 22, 2019, on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
