The big closer for June’s State of Play was the announcement of a brand new God of War action game, something a bit different, developed by Sony Santa Monica Studio. God of War: Laufey is a prequel story that follows Faye, wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus, after her death. The game is currently in development for PlayStation 5, but no release date or window was given.
Faye wakes up in a bizarre realm after her death, seemingly ruled by a host of mythological figures. It’s not exactly clear who these figures are just yet, but they seem very much inspired by Asian and Egyptian mythology, and it seems entirely possible either or both pantheons could be used here.
But it was much more than just a simple announcement trailer, as PlayStation shared a whopping 20 minutes of gameplay footage to close out the show. Through it, we got to see Faye fighting with a sword, a bit of exploration, and meeting what seems to be the game’s sidekick, a D&D-inspired gelatinous cube. So while past God of War games focused on a single pantheon of mythology, it seems like a lot more could be on the table this time around. You can see the trailer below.
And here’s the official description for God of War: Laufey
“Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her death, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus in her absence are now at risk.
To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods – the Everywhen – where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic. Harness Faye’s speed, control, and relentlessness to overwhelm even the fiercest of foes with decisive, deadly precision.”
In addition to the reveal, PlayStation uploaded a meet-the-cast video and an introduction-to-Faye video. Like in the previous games, Faye is played by Deborah Ann Woll (Daredevil, Daredevil: Born Again), who will also be a guest at Game Con Canada, June 19-21.
