During its massive 40-minute State of Play, Sony had a few surprises to share, with the biggest being the announcement of Until Dawn 2 — a brand new narrative horror game that looks more like a spiritual successor than a direct sequel.
What’s most interesting about the new game, however, is that development is not being handled by Supermassive Games, the studio behind the original Until Dawn. Instead, PlayStation’s first-party studio, Firesprite Games, is handling it. Firesprite has previously worked on The Persistence series, as well as the VR title Horizon: Call of the Mountain. Supermassive, meanwhile, just released Directive 8020, the latest entry in its own The Dark Pictures narrative horror franchise, very much inspired by Until Dawn.
Until Dawn 2 follows a team of amateur ghost hunters who’ve traveled to a remote abandoned island in search of their next viral hit. As you might imagine, things don’t exactly go as planned. It seems like the second game will put just as much emphasis on player choice and the chance of pretty much every main character dying while the story carries on. The official description reads,
“Ready to die for likes? Join a team of ambitious ghost hunters as they chase their next viral hit on a remote island haunted by a woman’s chilling story of something far darker than they bargained for.
When the tale begins to manifest in terrifying ways, survival will take more than a strong signal to get off the island alive. Their lives are in your hands. Make every choice count.”
While we don’t know the entire cast yet, it’s quite obvious that one of the main characters is played by Neil Newbon, the voice actor behind Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3. The character also sports Newbon’s likeness.
Until Dawn 2 is currently in development, with a release window of 2027 for PS5.
