Although not confirmed, it is very likely that Borderlands 3 is well under development over at Gearbox.
During Pax West, this weekend, the CEO and President of Gearbox Randy Pitchford appeased fans by strongly hinting that Borderlands 3 is well under development. Pitchford went on to state that the renowned games’ company has dedicated around 90 percent of the studios’ staff towards an unannounced game. Pitchford further hinted at the game by specifically stating that the project that they are working on is most likely what fans want out of the games’ company.
It should be noted that Pitchford never explicitly mentioned Borderlands 3 by name. He went on to state, “a product does not exist until it’s announced,” according to a report by Dualshockers. Talking specifics, Pitchford stated that Gearbox is busy “working on the thing I think most of you guys want us to be working on.”
The existence of Borderlands 3 is nothing new, Randy Pitchford confirmed the title would eventually hit markets, albeit with a different name. During Pax 2015, Pitchford brought up the future of Gearbox’s beloved Borderlands series — stating that a future Borderlands title would enter development after the completion of the then, yet to be released Battleborn.
The last Borderlands inspired game to come out was 2015’s Tales From the Borderlands. The game was a narrative heavy title from Telltale games and was well received by fans of the series. The last traditional entry into the series was back in 2014 with the release of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel — the title took place between the events of the first two games and was later re-released in 2015, as a part of the Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, which brought the series to current-gen consoles.
There hasn’t been an entry into the Borderlands series since the Pre-Sequel, a title that was designed on ageing platforms. Even with a remaster in 2015, many fans were left clamouring for a proper next-gen entry into the loot heavy FPS series. With games like Destiny and even Overwatch, it should be interesting to see the direction a new Borderlands title takes.
