A Boy and His Blob Returns For Current Consoles

The jellybean fueled adventures of A Boy and His Blob are once again headed to consoles with updated visuals and classic jelly-munching gameplay.

Slated for a January 19

release for PS4 and Vita, Xbox One, and PC, the reimagining of the NES classic: A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Bloblonia (originally released on the Wii in 2009), following a young boy and a mysterious alien blob, as they endeavored to save Earth and Planet Bloblonia from an evil despot. Players would feed the Blob jellybeans which turned it into various items used to solve puzzles.

The 2009 reimagining took the interesting puzzle-platforming of the original and made it more charming and approachable. Its aesthetics being inspired, according to Art Director Marc Gomez by many works, most notably that of Hayao Miyazaki. Combined with tightened up game mechanics that make a lot of the puzzle and platforming elements challenging without being frustrating.

Oddly enough, the updated version is not set for a WiiU release, which is odd considering the game’s legacy with Nintendo. My guess is given the original’s place on the Wii library, Nintendo may not have seen a need to re-release it, however with cleaned up visuals, and mapping jellybean selection the Gamepad, this could have been an excellent little re-tread for the game on a new Nintendo audience.
