E3 2018: Sony Press Conference Rundown 1

Sony’s 2018 E3 Press Conference featured a few musical announcements and surprise reveals but mostly focused on a handful of core games. Check out the best of Sony’s conference below!

The Last of Us Part II

First up was The Last of Us Part II. The footage began with a quiet moment of Ellie dancing in a community event, before cutting to her brutally stabbing a man in the throat in the middle of a forest covered city street. The demo then followed Ellie as she snuck through enemy patrols, showcasing both melee and ranged combat that looked particularly brutal. While the trailer looked excellent, no release date was announced.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

In a short intermission, a new Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 trailer revealed that several old maps from previous Black Ops games would be returning in a ‘Back in Black’ promotion for owners of Black Ops 3. Don’t own Black Ops 3? Don’t worry, because, in a surprise announcement, Sony revealed that Black Ops 3 would be available on PS Plus for free later tonight.

Destiny 2: Forsaken

A new cinematic trailer for Destiny 2: Forsaken was shown during the press conference, which will launch on September 4, 2018.

Ghost of Tsushima

Next up was Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch’s samurai game set during the Mongol Invasion of Japan. The debut gameplay trailer showed off the game’s gorgeous visuals and animations while focusing on a mission to rescue a captive monk from a small Mongol garrison. Combat was swift and brutal, closing out with a samurai duel, as it should. Much like The Last of Us Part II, no release date was announced.

Control

Remedy Games revealed their next title during Sony’s Press Conference. Titled Control, the trailer showcased a young woman travelling through a dreamlike landscape, fighting back against enemies with both a gun and telekinetic powers.

Resident Evil 2 Remake

Capcom showcased the first trailer for their upcoming remake of Resident Evil 2. The engine appears to be the one used for Resident Evil 7, and it looks absolutely stunning. Plus, we’ve got a release date: January 25, 2019.

Trover Saves The Universe

Trover Saves the Universe is a new platformer from Justin Roiland, the co-creator of Rick and Morty. It looks incredibly weird, with Roiland voicing a character who is narrating the events of the game before he is electrocuted in a bathtub. It is coming exclusively to the PS4 and PS VR, though no release window has been announced.

Kingdom Hearts 3

After Square Enix’s conference played the same Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer as the one shown during Microsoft’s event, Sony unveiled a Pirates of the Caribbean themed trailer for the upcoming RPG. In addition to showcasing a hyper-realistic Jack Sparrow and crew, the trailer revealed that Kingdom Hearts 3 would feature naval combat and underwater areas to explore. Kingdom Hearts 3 will launch on January 29, 2019

Death Stranding

After years of vague, cinematic trailers, we finally saw a vague, gameplay trailer for Kojima Productions Death Stranding. Judging from the footage, it looks like you’ll be making deliveries at some point, but it remains unknown why exactly you are doing it or what else you would be doing in the game. Norman Reedus is also seen trying to evade a series of ghostly figures, before being caught and subsequently dragged into a black pool. As for the cinematic portion of the trailer, it is still unclear what exactly the invisible monsters are, why Reedus has a pod with a baby inside, or who the character played by Lea Seydoux is or why she ate a bug that looked suspiciously like an infant. What is for certain is that this is most definitely a Hideo Kojima game. It’s another strange trailer that reveals little, and a release date is still not announced.

Nioh 2

Nioh 2 was announced during Sony’s press conference. The action-RPG sequel’s teaser was short, but it will once again be developed by Team Ninja.

Spider-Man

Closing out the show was the newest trailer for everyone’s favourite web crawler that focused on Spider-Man’s attempts to put down a break out at The Raft—the prison for super villains. Combat was heavily featured, and viewers got to watch as Spider-Man juggled enemies in the air, stole riot shields to use as projectiles, and generally kicked butt. Several of Spider-Man’s most iconic villains were also spotlighted, such as Electro,  Rhino, Vulture, and Scorpion, who were apparently working for an unknown benefactor. The trailer ends on quite a cliffhanger as well. Luckily, you don’t have to wait long for Spider-Man, which is set to launch of September 7, 2018.

Deracine

While the press conference ended on the main stage, a new title called Deracine by From Software was announced in the post-show. Little is known about the game for now, but it will be a VR title.
