When host Seth Meyers looked at the audience for this years Golden Globes, he would have seen a sea of celebrities dressed in black. The reason that they were wearing black is simple: they want to put a stop to the sexual harassment that is plaguing their industry.
Alongside the black outfits however, one could also find many actors, such as Chris Hemsworth, wearing a pin that says: “Time’s up.” This pin is meant to signify their support for a movement called, “Time’s Up,” a group that works “…on behalf of over 300 women who work in film, television and theatre.”
Essentially, it’s a group that is raising money for a legal fund that will help women in the entertainment industry who have been sexually harassed by powerful men.
On their website, it says, “Time’s Up is a unified call for change from women in entertainment for women everywhere. From movie sets to farm fields to board rooms alike, we envision nationwide leadership that reflects the world in which we live.” Basically, they want to make a change and stop the sexual harassment that has been plaguing the world of entertainment.
Along with the focus on the sexual harassment scandal, a few actors are facing backlash for wearing their “Time’s Up” pins.
One such actor is Justin Timberlake, who many believe should not have been wearing the pin due to his recent involvement in Wonder Wheel, which was directed by Woody Allen, who has faced many allegations of sexual harassment.
While some actors wore pins and dressed in black, others brought activists as their dates. Michelle Williams brought Tarana Burke, who helped found the #MeToo movement. Laura Dern brought Monica Ramirez, who co-founded Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, a group that works to better the lives of female farmworkers across the United States. Alongside others at the event, these activists were there in order to help bring about an improvement to women’s rights across the United States and around the world.
While there was much controversy surrounding the event, one cannot ignore the fact that Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri took home a total of four awards last night, including Best Motion Picture that is a Drama. Other notable award winners were Sterling K. Brown for his performance in This is Us, and Aziz Ansari for Master of None. Both are significant because Brown is the first black man to have taken home the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series that is a Drama, and Aziz Ansari is the first Asian man to do the same in a comedy.
Even though there was controversy surrounding the event, the main message of the night remained strong throughout. Oprah Winfrey summed it up nicely in her speech when she said, “What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have, and I’m especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their stories.”
