GTFO Unveils “Duality” Campaign at The Game Awards

Today at The Game Awards, 10 Chambers has announced the final chapter of co-op shooter GTFO, titled “Duality.” The development admits that the game can be, at times, a bit sadistic towards its players. But as it is with all good (and sadistic) things, they eventually have to come to an end.

Narrative Director and composer for GTFO, Simon Viklund, calls the final rundown of the popular multiplayer survival game “a celebration of the GTFO community.” I had a chance to look at the trailer ahead of the public announcement. The overarching theme for the rundown and the game as a whole came in the quote, “Whoever we were during this trauma, we are now as one,” supporting the game’s slogan, “Work together or die together.”

In GTFO, you play one of four “prisoners” sent down into the depths of an underground complex beneath the crater caused by an extinction-level event asteroid. Your job is to work together with this group of strangers, scavenge the complex and complete tasks set forth by the mysterious Warden. The game was released in early access on Steam in 2019, and version 1.0 was launched in late 2021.

The announcement for the eighth and final chapter of the game came at The Game Awards, a fitting place given the fact that the game’s original announcement came at the same event in 2017. Since then, it received the award for Best Cooperative Game at E3 in 2018 and was nominated at the Steam Awards in 2020 and 2022 for “The Best Game You Suck At.”

10 Chambers, the company founded in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2015, released GTFO as a “buy once” game, with no microtransactions or DLC for the game, with all expansions (additional rundowns and expeditions/maps) provided for free. While Duality will be the final rundown of the game with the final expeditions, the company will continue to maintain GTFO.

“While Duality will be the final rundown of the game with the final expeditions, the company will continue to maintain GTFO.”

The complete game will be given a free weekend on Steam so that potential new players can preview it, but this launch actually occurred in tandem with the announcement at The Game Awards, so Duality is available to play for current owners of the game right now.

As for the future of the game, Simon Viklund teased the potential for a console version. Viklund admitted that the company’s original team size prevented any chance of porting this game for consoles, but 10 Chambers’ growth from 10 to over 100 employees has made this a possibility, but qualifies that work on their upcoming game may push this down in priority.

You can get the now complete game on Steam for your PC, and whether you play the game with friends or with strangers, there is one constant, according to Viklund: “The game is your common enemy.”
