Guardians of the Galaxy trailer finally arrives 1

The long-awaited premiere trailer for Marvel’s eccentric group of super heroes, which surprisingly wasn’t leaked before its official emergence, finally arrived last night during the Jimmy Kimmel Show.

The Guardians of the Galaxy preview starts off with a cute introduction to Star-Lord, an interplanetary rogue policeman, and leader of the group. It then moves on to brief, yet informative introductions to the rest of his team as they’re all being processed and prepped for prison time due to their rash behaviour across the galaxy. And yes, one of the team members is a raccoon who shoots laser pistols.

This does lead to one minor disappointment, and it’s simply the fact that we don’t get to hear Rocket Raccoon and his muscle Groot speak whatsoever during the trailer. Rocket is voiced by Bradley Cooper, while Vin Diesel lends his voice talent to the powerful member of a society of sentient trees. Yet despite these minor let downs, one will quickly realize how incredibly goofy this movie is shaping up to be, while at the same time maintaining a colourful and charming personality that fits right into the Marvel universe. Believe it or not, it’s all going to come together down the road, and we’ll likely see the Avengers, or at least certain members of the group, interact with the Guardians of the Galaxy. The trailer actually hints at this, as the mysterious figure known as The Collector, who was showcased after the credits of Thor: The Dark World, makes a very brief appearance.

To shed some light on what The Collector means in the grand scheme of things, he is one of the oldest living beings in the universe, and he foresees that beings of great power will arise one day determined to destroy all life in the universe. He builds a ship, constructs several museums across multiple planets, and travels across the universe collecting beings and artifacts that he could one day use to repopulate the universe in case his terrible vision comes to pass.

At the end of The Dark World, we see him receive the Aether – that terrible gooey mess in a box that caused all the trouble for Thor and the rest of Asgard – and assures the pair of Asgardian warriors who gave it to him that it will be safe with him. With the Tesseract (the blue cosmic cube) already on Asgard, the concern for the Asgardians was having two “Infinity Stones” together on their home world, which could become very dangerous. When they depart however, The Collector says to himself, “one down, five to go.”

So what did that mean exactly? Well, another powerful being is trying to get his hands on these Infinity Stones, and we saw him after the credits in The Avengers. The purple titan known as Thanos, who just so happens to have a hardcore desire to destroy the universe, is looking to collect all six of them, because with all six, one has the power to rule, or destroy the universe. Whether The Collector is amassing these stones for himself or for Thanos is unknown, but we’ll likely get some more insight on his character in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Phew. It may be a lot to take in, but it just shows how far in advance Marvel is looking, and it’s mighty exciting seeing these intertwined comic book story-lines literally coming to life on the big screen.
