Guild Wars Goes Full Card Game

Mistbound is a New Digital CCG Spin-Off of Guild Wars, and It’s Boldly Going Mobile

The creative masterminds behind Guild Wars have taken to the internet to announce Mistbound, an official spin-off that bridges the gap between the MMO and the popular deck-building genre.

Get ready to take the Guild Wars battlefield to the digital tabletop! ArenaNet, the makers behind Guild Wars, in collaboration with the developers at NC and globally published by bilibili, have announced a new battlefield they’re challenging (and it’s not more Guild Wars 3). Introducing Mistbound, the first Collectible Card Game (CCG) based on the staggering mythos of Guild Wars, aiming to bring a new way to play in the universe of the popular MMO. ArenaNet has unleashed a trailer showcasing what’s to come, and it can be seen here.

Mistbound will draw upon the franchise’s deep lore, iconic characters, and notable artwork and music to breathe life into the digital tabletop. While Guild Wars is known for its grand adventure, Mistbound will introduce new strategic depth and content in both single-player and multiplayer modes, giving fans a new way to engage with the world of Tyria. Mistbound players will embody a commander. This injects the player onto the battlefield as the objective is to deploy cards onto a 5 x 3 tactical grid to outmaneuver opposing units. This feature is dubbed Dynamic Movement Gameplay, and it allows each card to move in multiple directions per turn, ensuring no two games remain the same, like other CCGs in the space.

Baek Hakjun, Game Designer of Mistbound, is also a veteran in the CCG space. Hakjun is better known as “Kranich,” a former professional Hearthstone player and World Championship competitor, and he says, “At first, the game is approachable. Placing units on a battlefield and engaging in combat is intuitive, allowing new players to learn quickly. But as you continue playing, you begin focusing on the significance of every turn and every decision. Eventually, you discover the satisfaction of reading and controlling the entire board,” boasting Mistbound is easy to pick up and hard to master. ArenaNet also listed some important in-game mechanics, which can be seen below.

  • Dynamic Movement is here – Mistbound tosses traditional static battlefield systems and brings battles to life through a dynamic 5×3 tactical grid where both commanders and units can freely move, reposition, and outmaneuver opponents.
  • Commander × Profession System – Like Magic: The Gathering and Riot Games’ Riftbound, Mistbound deploys powerful cards (based on iconic Guild Wars characters) to step onto the battlefield as commanders, each bringing unique abilities, traits, and tactical identity. Unlike other CCGs, ArenaNet uses the class system from Guild Wars 2, and includes all nine professions to tinker with. This system preserves the franchise’s combat styles while allowing the player to adapt on the fly with a strategic element. By freely pairing commanders and professions, Mistbound embraces the Guild Wars 2 vision of playing how you like.
  • Is Mistbound, But Also, Guild WarsThe Guild Wars franchise has a built-in fanbase, and the new CCG will embrace it. Beloved characters will return with a refreshed presentation that blends epic mechanics with refined artistic detail. This ethos allows Mistbound to have its own identity, while also delivering a rich visual experience that honours the aesthetic of Guild Wars and reimagines it for a new strategic battlefield.

Unfortunately for fans, the collaboration between ArenaNet, NC, and bilibili is still in the early stages of development, so a release date window hasn’t been announced, but it has been confirmed for mobile and PC so far. At the end of the trailer, ArenaNet advises fans to “Stay tuned for pre-registration.” For more information about the upcoming Guild Wars CCG, Mistbound, fans can head to the official site.
