Defiant Development, the Australian team behind the Hand of Fate games, is closing its doors, and offered a small look at a cancelled project.
Having formed in 2010, the studio formed to demonstrate that Australia can have its own substantial game developers and IPs, and they took risky directions with their games to do so. The Hand of Fate games stood out as a bold new fusion of action and card gaming, and it looks like what would have been their next game, A World In My Attic, would have taken that approach with a Catan-esque hexagonal world-building/action-adventure hybrid. The trailer claims that there will be a Q1 2021 release, but that’s not happening, unfortunately. The studio cited an inability to adapt to the times as the reason for the shutdown, as well as a lack of safety net due to their experimental approach.
In their announcement, Defiant Development declared that they would continue to support their existing products for an unspecified amount of time and that their team is already looking for new work. We wish Defiant and their people the best of luck in their future endeavours.
