In the summer of 2023, the next release from famed animation house Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki, How Do You Live, will be released in theatres across Japan.

Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, How Do You Live will be released by the company on July 14th. As part of the announcement, Studio Ghibli also released a new poster for the film via Twitter, although no word has been given as to whether the film will be released internationally yet.

A number of years ago, Hayao Miyazaki and the studio announced the project they would be working on together; the legendary director returned from his retirement to lead the project, which first came to light in 2017 after the release of his final film The Wind Rises.

How Do You Live is based on a YA novel by Genzaburo Yoshino in 1937, about a 15-year-old boy who goes on a journey with his uncle to discover spiritual growth, poverty, and the meaning of life through the advice he receives from a journal written by his uncle.

In a 2020 interview with Entertainment Weekly Studio Ghibli producer, Toshio Suzuki outlined: “We are only able to come up with one minute of animation in a month. That means 12 months a year, you get 12 minutes worth of movie. Actually, we’ve been working on this film for three years, so that means we have 36 minutes completed so far. We’re hoping it will finish in the next three years.”

Founded by Hayao Miyazaki in 1985, Studio Ghibli has been busy in recent years and recently opened a theme park based on the works of Miyazaki. This theme park features rides and attractions that are inspired by Miyazaki’s films like My Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke. It was also recently announced that a stage adaptation of the movie My Neighbor Totoro was going to be performed in London, United Kingdom.

How Do You Live, will be Studio Ghibli’s first feature-length production since the 2020 film Earwig and the Witch, that was directed by Hayao Miyazaki’s son, Gorō Miyazaki. Last month, the studio released a glimpse of Grogu on Disney+, an animated short following the Star Wars universe.
