His manager Justine Hunt confirmed to the Associated Press the actor died on Saturday, November 19. Hunt asked for the “privacy of his family and friends during this horrible time as we come to terms with the loss of such a wonderful human being.” TMZ confirmed he died by suicide.

Frank’s character began with the introduction of the Green Ranger in the first season of the show and played a more antagonistic role at first. One of Frank’s co-stars, Walter Emmanuel Jones who played Zach Taylor (the original Black Ranger) wrote on Instagram, “Can’t believe it… RIP Jason David Frank. My heart is sad to have lost another member of our special family.” The reference to “another member” was because another one of their co-stars, Thuy Thang (played Trini Kwan and the original Yellow Ranger) died at the age of 27 in 2001 from injuries inflicted in a car accident.

As well as being an on-screen action hero, Frank was a real-life hero as he possessed a black belt in karate and was known to practice various other styles of martial arts including Taekwondo, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai. He was inducted into both the World Karate Union Hall of Fame and the Black Belt Hall of Fame. He also taught martial arts and co-founded the Rising Sun Karate Academy.

Fans flooded social media with their condolences and heartfelt messages. He has always been a fan-favourite at many conventions like Fan Expo Canada. The actor of the original Red Ranger, Austin St. John also shared on Instagram despite their known feud, “Once a ranger, always a ranger’ thoughts and prayers…”
