Magic The Gathering & Doctor Who Get a Big Crossover at SDCC 2023

Wizards of the Coast brought surprises for Magic the Gathering fans this SDCC 2023, where they announced yet another crossover, and this time it’s with Doctor Who.

It’s not hard to say Magic the Gathering is a popular TCG. This year saw the release of a massive MTG crossover with LOTR, featuring an incredibly rare 1-of-1 “One Ring” card written in full Sindarin (which has since been found and graded, no less), so it is surprising Wizards of the Coast has announced a new crossover so soon after the last one at SDCC 2023.

MTG and Doctor Who are officially collaborating on a new set featuring iconic artifacts, rules and lore as seen in the hit BBC series. Below, fans can see some of the cards for the upcoming set, and yes, it does include a Tenth Doctor card complete in the likeness of David Tennant.

The depth of the previous Lord of the Rings crossover proved it was not just a gimmick. A lot of Tolkien lore was explored and explained with card effects that function as a Magic the Gathering player would expect, but more importantly, stayed faithful to the source material. This time around, Wizards of the Coast has their hands entirely full as they attempt to steep MTG in the lore surrounding a series that has spanned over 60 years in a single set.

This set has noticeable nods to the series and keeps the rules of the realm intact, including the typical trash mob of the Doctor Who world (from the Third Doctor’s perspective), the Dalek. Wizards of the Coast refers to the new Magic The Gathering set as The Universes Beyond, and the set will feature four Commander Decks built from the top down to capture the essence of Doctor Who’s iconic characters and memorable stories.

The new Magic the Gathering and Doctor Who Commander Decks will launch on October 13, and pre-orders are available now through Wizards of the Coast.
