Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 Adds Pixelated Events

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is introducing a new game type that adds 10 2D sprite-based events to its roster.

8-bit Mario characters are set to take on 16-bit Sonic characters in a retro take on the game’s roster of minigames. Only the simpler games are present, but this aesthetic is still a major selling point for someone who’s been pining to see something like this in an official crossover. The ten retro events are 100m, 10m Platform (Diving), 400m Hurdles, Gymnastics – Vault, Judo, Kayak Single (K-1) 1000m, Long Jump, Marathon, Shooting – Trap, and Volleyball.

The Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games series has been running since November 2007. Starting as the first official video game of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, the games are licensed by the International Olympic Committee through exclusive licensee International Sports Multimedia, and are the first official crossover games to feature characters from both the Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog series. Tokyo 2020 is the sixth game in the franchise, and with this move it seems poised to recapture some of the original’s success.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is releasing exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on November 5th. If this news got you interested, you can check out its official eshop page here.
