Metroid Ravenous, Out in January 2027, Gives Samus the Power to Devour

And It Looks Incredible

Metroid Ravenous, a Brand-New 2D Entry, Launches in January 2027

Nintendo surprised fans by announcing a brand-new Metroid game during its recent Direct, and you don’t even have to wait long for it. A new 2D entry in the franchise, Metroid Ravenous, hits on January 28, 2027.

There are a couple of extremely interesting details in the first trailer, which also provides a healthy look at gameplay. For one, Samus is talking, something that hasn’t happened since Metroid Other M on the Nintendo Wii. For another, it looks like Ravenous will feature a quite aggressive playstyle, supported by the narrative itself. At the end of the trailer, we see Samus literally devouring a creature with a crazed glint in her eyes, stating it’s “eat or be eaten.”

Samus is seemingly attacked by a group of mysterious beings (though they appear to be Chozo). In traditional Metroid fashion, her powers are all taken, and it seems like this time around she may have to eat enemies in order to restore her strength. It also appears she’ll get at least one sort of “form” to transform into.

Although the trailer doesn’t confirm who’s developing Ravenous, it does look quite similar to Metroid Dread, which was developed by MercurySteam. We’ll likely have to wait until closer to launch to get official confirmation on the developer behind the game, however. If it does happen to be MercurySteam, it’s in good hands, as we said in our review of Dread, “Metroid Dread is a wonderful, modern take on a classic game from childhood. It looks as beautiful as any of today’s games, but has a feel of the games of old. The scary tone of the game and its intense foes give you a challenge worthy of the series.”

Metroid Ravenous launches on January 28, 2027, exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2.
