Miyamoto: Mario 3DS is "coming this year"

A playable build of the first Mario 3DS game will be ready for E3.

Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto recently talked Super Mario 3DS in an interview with Edge Magazine, and while he didn’t give too much away, he says that the famous plumber’s next outing will be available before the end of 2011.

According to Miyamoto, the first Mario game for the 3DS will be “completely original, and coming this year.” He then added that, “It’s a combination of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario on N64. It won’t convey the message if I talk to you today, but if you play it at E3 that will give you more understanding of what I’m talking about.”

Miyamoto went on to praise the unique capabilities of the 3DS and believes that it will directly enhance the Mario experience.

“For example, the floors floating in space: in 2D it’s difficult to judge the distance, but in 3D it’s really easy,” he explained.

Interestingly, Miyamoto also all but ‘confirmed’ the rumor that the beloved Raccoon Suit would be returning in the new title. Super Mario 3DS was first unveiled during Nintendo President Satoru Iwata’s keynote address at GDC and the game’s logo appeared to have a rather iconic tail.

“The tail you mentioned on the logo – it’s what you think it is,” he said. “You probably know what’s going to happen using that character.”

With both Link and Mario coming to the 3DS, it looks like it’s going to be an exciting year for Nintendo fans.
