PlayStation 3 Ceases Production in Japan

PlayStation 3 Ceases Production

Sony has officially ended production of the PlayStation 3 in Japan.

Sony of Japan has announced that they are ceasing production of the 500GB PlayStation 3, which will mark the end of production for the system entirely. The PlayStation 3 has been around for more than 10 years, with over 80 million units in sales. This is the last model of the PlayStation 3 (CECH-4300C) which first went on sale in 2014.

Over the years, Sony ended up releasing three major revisions of the PlayStation 3. Sony launched their successor to the PlayStation 2 in 2006 with the now, large and fat ps3 that came equipped with as small as a 20GB hard drive, followed by a slim model in 2009 under a new, “PS3” branding and finally a super slim model in 2012 that replaced the traditional disk-drive with a sliding bay, which further trimmed down the already small form factor of the previous model.

Although the PlayStation 3 will no longer be in production, gamers can still play a huge catalogue of the consoles extensive library of games through the PlayStation Now service, which allows consumers to stream PlayStation 3 titles to their PlayStation 4’s and computers.
