The latest PlayStation 4 update, version 7.00, has introduced Remote Play support for mobile devices running Android 5.0. or higher.
It’s notable news given Remote Play support was previously limited to iOS devices and Sony Xperia Android smartphones, leaving other Android users out in the cold. Anyone who wants to get in on the action and stat streaming select PS4 titles to their mobile device can download the PS4 Remote Play App from the Google Play store right now.
Over on iOS, the Remote Play App has also been updated to allow users to display the controller at all times and lock the screen orientation. Support for DualShock 4 wireless controllers has also been added for players on Android 10, iOS 13, iPadOS 13, or macOS Catalina (when it launches later this month).
Players will be able to have parties of up to 16 people — up from 8 — and there will be chat transcription available for those in the U.S. To access the chat transcription, you’ll need to use the PS4 Second Screen App on your mobile device. The blog post announcing the software update notes that network connectivity and audio quality in parties will also be improved.
While these additions are more for niche users than the PS4’s primary audience, they’re still welcome additions that make things more convenient for users looking to game around the house or with lots of friends. Just remember: these rely on a good online connection to function, so make sure your PlayStation 4 has a wired connection via a LAN cable or something like that.
