Sony says there's "no truth" to rumours of credit card info being sold

Sony is still having credit card problems, but nobody has been trying to sell info back to Sony.

Patrick Seybold, the senior director of corporate communications and social media at SCEA, recently addressed the rumour that PSN users’ credit card numbers were being offered for sale on forums.

“We want to state this again given the increase in speculation about credit card information being used fraudulently,” Seybold wrote. “One report indicated that a group tried to sell millions of credit card numbers back to Sony. To my knowledge there is no truth to this report of a list, or that Sony was offered an opportunity to purchase the list.”

The rest of the post reiterates Sony president Kaz Hirai’s statements from the weekend, and he says that nobody from Sony will be trying to contact customers for identification information.

“Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information,” Seybold wrote. “If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking.”

Of course, it’s not yet clear how the latest news about the breach at will alter Sony’s position, and there’s still a chance that more credit card information has been lost. Even so, it’s at least somewhat re-assuring to know that the information isn’t being used for extortion at this time.
