Spider-Man Miles Morales Is a Standalone PS5 Expansion

Insomniac Games made a PlayStation Blog post for Spider-Man Miles Morales, in hopes of clearing up some confusion over its scope after the game was announced during the PlayStation 5 reveal earlier in June 2020.

Much attention was put to Spider-Man Miles Morales being a smaller game than its predecessor while fans were left wondering if it was DLC. According to The Telegraph, Sony VP had previously stated that it was “an expansion and an enhancement to the previous game.”

This would have also suggested players would need to own a copy of Marvel’s Spider-Man from the PS4 or an enhanced version of it for PS5 and access Spider Man Miles Morales.

Luckily, Insomniac’s Creative Director Brian Horton and the studio are calling it a standalone game which follows up on the introduction of Miles Morales after the first game’s events. We last saw Miles training with Peter Parker in web swinging after discovering his newfound powers were similar to Spider-Man’s. The new game would see an experienced Miles fighting crime in his iconic black-and-red suit.

According to Horton, the Spider-Man Miles Morales is also set later during the winter. New York City is much colder while the original open world map is covered in snow this time around. Miles also has more free time to become a new Spider-Man as the city goes into another Christmas break. But he quickly loses some vacation time stopping danger in Harlem as two opposing groups fight to steal technology.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will show off near-instant loading, ray-tracing, 3D audio and the DualSense controller,” Horton wrote, adding the standalone game adds tons of upgrades to gameplay and graphics tailored for a next gen setting.

“We’ve upgraded our characters with 4D scans and improved skin shading for more realistic looking characters and spline-based hair that moves far more naturally. Many of the city’s assets have also been updated to take advantage of the new console. As you experience Miles’s story, you’ll see, hear, and feel things in a whole new way, all thanks to PS5.”

Spider-Man Miles Morales is set to launch with the PlayStation 5 sometime this Holiday 2020.
