Square Enix Support Website Posts Star Ocean 2 Logo, Then Removes It

A logo for Star Ocean: The Second Story R appeared on the Square Enix support website earlier today, and after making waves on the Internet, it has now been removed.

Today, there is hope that the sequel to the original Star Ocean might be re-released in North America, as earlier today, Square Enix posted and then removed a banner logo for the title from its support website, RPGSite reports. Star Ocean has a niche following, and since Square Enix re-registered the trademark in 2013, there have been many releases and re-releases in the series, the most recent being The Divine Force, which was released in the autumn.

One of those re-releases, however, was First Departure R, an HD remaster for the PS4 and Nintendo Switch that was released in 2019. This was a remaster of an enhanced remake released for the PSP in 2007. The sequel, The Second Story, also got the remaster treatment for the PSP, called Second Evolution, and was released in 2008. The 2008 version was then remastered and re-released for PS Vita and PS3 in 2015, but as a digital-only title in Japan.

Unlike its predecessor, Second Evolution has been left on the PSP since 2008 in North America. The logo for the leaked banner can be seen below and features the original PS1 title, The Second Story R instead of Second Evolution.

Square Enix’s decision to remove the now ubiquitous leaked logo could be the Streisand Effect, and Square is no stranger to leaks of this nature, as Final Fantasy XV‘s release date was similarly leaked prior to its announcement. It’s worth noting that although the logo appears to be genuine and has been posted on a genuine Square Enix site, fans should be wary of getting too excited, as Square has yet to comment on the leak or make any sort of official announcement.
