Street Fighter’s New Trailer Doubles Down on Camp, Chaos, and Pure 90s Energy

The New Street Fighter Trailer Brings More 1990's Camp Energy To The Screen

Fans were notably impressed with the first Street Fighter film trailer, and its commitment to self-awareness and 90’s camp. With the new trailer today, they’ve renewed that commitment.

The first Street Fighter film trailer was a big spectacle at The Game Awards this year. The trailer not only infiltrated the video game showcase but also brought the entire cast ensemble onstage and introduced them to the crowd (with some well-timed and not-so-well-timed jokes). The initial trailer pedalled the chaotic energy of the Street Fighter scene, and revealed that the cast would include fighters from the first two games (and Alpha). Keeping up with the campy tone and not taking itself too seriously, the trailer can be seen below courtesy of Paramount. Warning, it contains gratuitous “What’s Up” by the 4 Non Blondes (notably absent from the latest Masters of the Universe film trailer).

Unlike the 1994 film of the same name, Street Fighter stars  David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Roman Reigns as Akuma, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, Mel Jarnson as Cammy, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Andrew Koji as Ryu, and more. The film is helmed by Director Kitao Sakurai, and its main focus puts series mascots Ryu and Ken Masters at the centre of a fighting tournament.

They were brought there at the request of Chun-Li, and a conspiracy lies beneath the surface of the tournament and its leader, M. Bison. The two fighters will have to uncover this conspiracy while fighting everyone else, each other, and apparently tow all of the 1990s vibes with it. There’s even a scene where a car plays the opponent, just like its fighting game inspiration. The Street Fighter film is not taking itself too seriously.

Street Fighter launches exclusively in theatres on October 16 (no popcorn buckets have been announced yet).
