Ubisoft Announces Sam: The Company's First Mobile Assistant 1

Ubisoft has announced Sam, its first ever gaming assistant.

Users can ask Sam questions about Ubisoft titles, announcements and almost anything related to Ubisoft games, either via text or voice over. Currently available through Ubisoft’s Club app, Sam utilizes instant messaging type conversations. The app is currently in Beta mode and exclusive to English users in Canada, with plans to branch out to more languages and countries in the coming months.

The company state in a press release that Sam is linked directly to a player’s Ubisoft account which allows Sam to “analyze their latest matches and provide tailored hints and tips through the Daily Login feature.” Furthermore, the company stated that if players find themselves struggling in a game, Sam will analyze why it is that you are struggling and even “proactively send a video tip from the community.” It remains to be seen how gamers react to being told how to fix their faults but the technological potential is intriguing.

Vice President of online services at Ubisoft, Stephanie Perotti stated: “with Sam, our ambition is to create an innovative and helpful service for players, one that knows them and helps push them get more out of their gaming experience.” She went on to mention that Sam provides “a more personalized experience for our fans and delivers them what they need faster, so they can spend less time searching and more time playing.”

Sam uses Google Cloud’s Dialogflow Enterprise Edition, which is a development suite that is currently in Beta. Dialogflow is used for building conversational interfaces for websites, mobile applications, popular messaging platforms, and IoT devices. In using this technology Ubisoft hopes to speed up the process of reacting to user questions and adding new answers on a consistent basis.

Ubisoft Club, the app in which you can find Sam on is the company’s mobile app rewards program. It allows users the ability to earn badges and virtual currency that they can use to access closed betas and unlock Ubisoft store discounts. The service was announced back in October of 2015 and it replaced Ubisoft’s old reward system, UPlay.

I got the chance to chat with Sam via the Ubisoft Club app, where I learned that its favorite game is Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, its relationship status is complicated and that it is a huge Nintendo fan.
