Volition founder leaving his own company

After 15 years heading Volition, Mike Kulas is saying farewell.

Mike Kulas, the founder and president of Volition Inc., will be saying goodbye to the company he established.

“Mike Kulas, GM of our Volition studio in Champaign, Illinois, has retired from Volition and THQ effective May 2,” a THQ representative told GameSpot. “We are thankful for Mike’s many years of dedication, and while we are saddened by his departure, we look forward to the next generation of leadership under longtime THQ and Volition employee Dan Cermak who will step into the role of GM.”

Kulas has said that his decision to step down wasn’t influenced by any exterior factors and that he made the choice for himself, and while he currently doesn’t have any professional plans to do anything game-related, his history would suggest that he’ll eventually find his way back into the business. The former Volition boss previously co-founded Parallax Software with Matt Toschlog in 1993, although the duo split three years later. Toschlog would go on to found Outrage Entertainment while Kulag established Volition, and both studios would later be acquired by THQ. Outrage has since been closed down by the publisher.

With Kulas out, Volition will now look to Cermak to man the helm and he’ll be given an excellent chance to start his reign off right with two triple-A titles in his first calendar year. Red Faction: Armageddon debuts in June and Saint’s Row: The Third is scheduled for the holiday season.
