Marvel’s Wolverine Gets a Gruesome Deep Dive at Sony’s Latest State of Play

Hope You Aren't Squeamish

Sony kicked off its big June State of Play with a fresh look at Marvel’s Wolverine, and it looks just as gruesome as ever.

In the blood-soaked gameplay, Wolverine rushes to save a bunch of mutants from being shipped off by Trask Industries, and gets a little bit of help along the way. It almost feels like I can’t overstate how bloody and gruesome the gameplay we see actually is, with Wolverine quite literally hacking enemies to pieces as geysers of blood shoot out in massive arcs. It certainly looks like Insomniac won’t be shying away from the sheer brutality of the beloved character.

Midway through the demo, Jean Grey appears to help the titular mutant, giving the duo some devastating team-up abilities while she flings enemy soldiers around like ragdolls.

This is also the first time we’ve seen the full working UI for the game, with presumably a health gauge and some special abilities, namely a kind of rage mode that Wolverine can enter. You can see the full gameplay reveal in the video down below.

A flurry of clips at the end gives us an even deeper look at the game as a whole. We see alternate costumes for Wolverine, including his cowboy outfit and a white tuxedo with an eyepatch. There’s a handful of characters that get a cameo too, including Sabertooth, Jean Grey, and what appears to be Omega Red. Pre-orders officially open for the game today on the PlayStation Store.

Marvel’s Wolverine is developed by Insomniac Games, the same studio behind PlayStation’s three exclusive Spider-Man games. We currently don’t know if Wolverine takes place in the same universe as Spider-Man, or if some familiar characters from Peter Parker’s adventure might appear.

Marvel’s Wolverine launches on September 15, 2026, for PS5.
