JLab has been cooking up some quality audio devices over the past two decades, always trying to balance high performance with affordability. The JLab Midnight Wireless Gaming Headset is no exception. One of the awesome highlights of this headset was how it quickly connected to my PC, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. Unfortunately, I do not own an Xbox Series X|S, but it can also be used on one as well. It boasts 60+ hours through wireless Bluetooth 5.4 and 100+ hours using the dongle wirelessly. I appreciated that it came fully charged out of the box.

Speaking of out of the box, the JLab Midnight Wireless Gaming Headset came with the detachable boom mic, USB-A adapter for the USB-C dongle, a 3.5mm to 3.5mm aux cable, and a USB-C to C charging cable. One of the cool design features is how the adjustable inner fabric headband can be turned over, offering a black option or shiny metallic blue exclusive to the Midnight line of new JLab headsets. The name was intended for the headset that lasts beyond midnight, since those are the prime gaming hours.

The patented Cloud Foam earcups on the JLab Midnight Wireless Gaming Headset were quite comfortable and are replaceable when they gain wear and tear. After about 40+ hours of use, I loved how light they were and fit perfectly to my head. As for the boom mic, I thought it was flimsy—feeling like it had no backbone to sit in front of my mouth where I needed to stay.

Also, there was no satisfying click when I plugged the mic into the base headset. I always ended up overpushing the mic in because I did not get that clicking feedback I would like when plugging something in. But I liked how easy it was to just plug in and use.

The on-board controls were simple, including the power button, mute button, and switch for changing between the dongle and Bluetooth connections. Having the mute button was essential for quickly muting my comms when someone came to talk to me while my teammates were clutching up.

As far as overall sound quality testing went, I found the customizability of the different sound profiles useful across PC and consoles. Whenever I transitioned from the lobbies in Valorant or Fortnite, the volume auto-adjusted to enhance the spatial listening experience. This did this automatically, which was jarring at first. Eventually, I got used to it, and it was a major bonus for hearing enemies coming from specific directions.

From a more story-driven gaming experience, the JLab Midnight Wireless Gaming Headset provided the immersive audio thrill I require—especially from a narrative-heavy game like Death Stranding 2: On the Beach or Silent Hill f. I primarily tested this headset on my PC and PlayStation 5. In both scenarios, the audio quality held up its end. Again, that enhanced spatial audio detail was near-pinpoint accurate, and the treble or vocals were not too tinny.

I found the best part of the JLab Midnight Wireless was how it was unintentionally versatile. Taking out the boom mic, it made for a good everyday headphones/headset. It may not have a deep, powerful bass profile as my other JBL or Sony headphones, but it was still good enough to use while going on walks or runs outside. It beats having the mic attached, and people giving you weird looks. This was by no means intended for casual listening use, but glad there was enough diversity in its use across the gaming and leisure boards.

I thought this headset would have a PC version for The Lab App, JLab’s dedicated app to customize most of their audio devices. Luckily, I found it after trekking through multiple JLab forums. Unfortunately, the app will not connect to my device. But in all honesty, the built-in detectors for when I am in a voice chat and playing a game were amazing. The headset naturally knew which sounds had priority, even if I was listening to music too. Yet, the customization would take it to the next level.

While the JLab Midnight Wireless Gaming Headset may have attempted to compete with premium wireless gaming headsets, this one exceeded my expectations. For a headset I could not customize with an app, it got the job done as a competitive gaming headset. Even without competitive games, the surround sound feel of cinematic moments in single-player games was the full package. The value definitely matched the quality with this one.
