TCL has spent years building a reputation as the brand that gives you more TV for less money, and there is no better example of that than the 2026 TCL QM7L TV. This TV delivers a staggering amount of value for the price. The TCL QM7L starts at just under $1,000 for the 55-inch model, with the 65-inch model reviewed here, and it is available in sizes up to a massive 98 inches. After spending more than a month with this TV, I can safely say TCL has a compelling option for gamers and home entertainment enthusiasts alike, with a range of sizes and prices to suit different needs and budgets.
Right out of the box, you would be forgiven for thinking the TCL QM7L is a much more expensive TV than its suggested retail price suggests. The frame is fairly thin, the smoked-chrome bezels look sharp, and the set feels premium, even if it is not as refined as some other models on the market.
Compared with the more expensive TCL QM8L and its ZeroBorder design, which nearly eliminates the bezel along the top and sides, the TCL QM7L TV still looks appropriately modern but feels a little less polished. Its simpler presentation is one area where TCL has kept costs down while still delivering a solid-looking package.
The TCL QM7L television has four HDMI 2.1 ports, though only two support the full bandwidth required for high-end gaming. On the plus side, neither shares the eARC connection, so using a soundbar will not take away a gaming input. That will be enough for many buyers, but the QM8L is the better choice for anyone with multiple modern gaming devices, especially those seeking high-frame-rate 4K gaming. All four of its HDMI 2.1 inputs support 4K at 144 Hz, though one still doubles as the eARC connection.
The stand does its job, but on larger models, it spreads wide and occupies a significant portion of a media console. Its design is similar to the stand used on the TCL QM8L, and I prefer it to the dual-leg design found on many low- to mid-tier TVs. It keeps the area mostly clear while ensuring the TV remains stable and less likely to be knocked over.
On the connectivity front, one notable drawback of the TCL QM7L is its Wi-Fi 5 support, which feels dated in 2026, especially since the QM8L includes Wi-Fi 6. The less expensive model also lacks an ATSC 3.0 tuner, so NextGen over-the-air broadcasts are unavailable. The real test begins once the TV is turned on and set up.
Picture quality is where the TCL QM7L TV truly shines, showing why TCL has built such a strong reputation in recent years. The Mini LED backlight uses up to 2,100 local dimming zones behind an HVA panel with a 6,000:1 native contrast ratio. The result is some of the deepest black levels I have seen from a TV that still uses LED backlighting. Bright scenes against dark backgrounds look fantastic, with highlights that have real impact.
TCL claims up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness, and independent testing has measured about 2,400 nits in Filmmaker Mode. That is still roughly 600 nits brighter than last year’s QM7K, giving HDR content real punch. The TCL QM8L takes this further with a claimed peak brightness of 6,000 nits and real-world results ranging from about 3,700 to more than 5,000 nits, depending on screen size and test conditions. It is brighter in both SDR and HDR, giving it an advantage in well-lit rooms and helping HDR highlights appear more intense.
The new SQD layer is the other major development. TCL says its quantum-dot system and refined colour filter can cover the full BT.2020 colour gamut. Measured results are closer to 85%, but the TV still covers nearly the entire DCI-P3 gamut, and colours look rich without appearing cartoonish. Skin tones hold up well in both SDR and HDR. There are some quirks, though. Very bright white highlights can sometimes take on an unusual blue tinge, and out-of-the-box colour accuracy is not quite at the level of more expensive rivals from Samsung or Sony. Colours look good, just not reference-grade, and that will be perfectly acceptable for most people.

Blooming is better controlled than on previous TCL models, but some hazy light bleed still creeps into dark scenes, especially in a pitch-black room or when the TV is viewed from the side. The screen is also glossy rather than matte. In a bright room with windows opposite the TV, reflections can be difficult to ignore. If your living room is a cave, you will love it. If it is bright, plan the TV’s placement carefully, or you may be in for a bad time.
Gamers, on the other hand, have little to complain about. The panel has a native refresh rate of 144 Hz, and TCL’s Game Accelerator feature pushes VRR even higher on PC, with FreeSync support built in. Both full-bandwidth HDMI ports support 4K gaming at up to 144 Hz, and Auto Low Latency Mode activates without fuss.
Add a dedicated game menu with picture modes and a virtual crosshair, and the TCL QM7L covers nearly everything a dedicated player could want. Fast motion in games and sports remains smooth, with only occasional stutter or flicker in scenes with dense on-screen detail. As noted earlier, however, you will need to use one of the full-bandwidth HDMI ports to get the most out of the TV’s gaming features.
Google TV handles the smart features and remains quick and responsive, which is more than I can say for some competitors in this price range. Google Gemini now handles hands-free voice commands in place of Google Assistant. It is smarter, though it also asks for access to more of your data. AirPlay, Chromecast and Bluetooth 5.4 are also supported.
On the audio side, the Bang & Olufsen-tuned speakers, including dual woofers on the back panel, deliver full, detailed sound with real bass. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are both supported. There are no upward-firing drivers, so height effects are limited, and a soundbar remains a worthwhile upgrade. TCL’s optional Z100 wireless speakers with FlexConnect offer an easy upgrade path for anyone who wants more, though we did not test them for this review.
The TCL QM7L TV has some real weaknesses, including a reflective screen, mediocre viewing angles, dated Wi-Fi support and colour that needs a little tuning out of the box. None of that changes the bigger picture. For around $1,000, you get searing brightness, near-OLED black levels, a wide colour gamut and a full suite of gaming features, all wrapped in a Google TV experience that simply works. The TCL QM7L pushes the mid-range closer to premium than anything else in its class, making it very easy to recommend.
