Logitech G613 Wireless Mechanical Keyboard Review

Modern Tech, Inferior Design

The previously reviewed Logitech G603 mouse was a great example that showcased Logitech’s Lightspeed wireless technology, proving that wireless peripherals can reach the same level of performance as wired ones. To perfectly complement this product and design philosophy, Logitech developed the G613 Wireless Mechanical Keyboard. Unfortunately, while the tech at the core of this new keyboard remains modern and innovative, the design feels like a relic of the past.

Retailing for $180 CAD, the Logitech G613 feels like a step back from a design perspective. A majority of tech manufacturers are slimming down their keyboards to conserve the user’s desk space as well as provide them with something portable to take to their local gaming events. That simply isn’t the case with the G613, which might be the bulkiest keyboard released in recent years weighing in at 3.1 lbs. Compared to previously reviewed boards, like the SteelSeries Apex M750, Logitech’s first wireless keyboard takes up a lot of desk real estate with little payoff. The shell bezels are wide, the wrist mount is permanently attached, and the board continues to eat up space with a set of six macro keys. It’s a design I simply don’t understand when this board is marketed towards modern PC players.

While I dislike the design of the Logitech G613, I continue to be impressed by their Lightspeed wireless technology. The reason PC players have sworn by wired peripherals for years is because wireless hardware in the past used to suffer from connectivity issues, stability, and most importantly, latency. Logitech has seemingly fixed these issues with this latest generation of hardware. By further optimizing their tech, the Logitech G613 is capable of delivering a 1ms report rate over a powerful and virtually lag-less 2.4 GHz connection. The user can also connect the G613 to multiple devices easily using Bluetooth, however, the report rate is increased.

Just like the G603, the Logitech G613 uses two AA batteries as its power source. While it’s certainly strange for modern devices like these to resort to batteries for their power rather than a USB recharge solution, I believe most users won’t be affected much when the expected battery life of the board is 18 months. If the user pairs the board with Logitech’s Gaming Software they will receive warning notifications to indicate when the keyboard drops below 15 per cent power.

After testing the Logitech G613 in DOOM, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, and Overwatch, I have come to the conclusion that this mechanical keyboard simply isn’t for me. While the Lightspeed wireless technology is great, the overall typing experience is hampered by the bulky design and Logitech’s choice to use their house built Romer-G switches. These switches have never resonated with me, unlike traditional cherry mx reds or browns, due to their awkward feel and squishy responsiveness. However, while my opinion says otherwise, sponsored pros beg to differ and swear by their quality.

I find it hard to recommend the Logitech G613. While I commend Logitech for releasing their first wireless mechanical keyboard, the quality isn’t up to par yet. This is a board designed for users looking for a minimalist, untethered setup, but the G613 is so bulky that most consumers would find it unappealing when compared to the wealth of competition in its price range. My recommendation would be to wait for the next generation of hardware for Logitech to slim down the board and provide more luxuries, including RGB, at a better price.

While I commend Logitech for releasing their first wireless mechanical keyboard, the Logitech G613 lacks a proper minimalist design to complement its efficient wireless technology.
