Continuing the wave of hype following Pokemon Go's release, another major release is scheduled for the fall. I'm not talking about Sun and Moon, either.
Del Rey and Century are putting out The Official Pokemon Book of Joy on September 22. This 300-page hardcover will be filled cover to cover with illustrations and inspirational quotes. No, really — this is 'mon-themed self-help book. The publisher assures that it will "set you on a personal journey of enlightenment to master your own Pokémon."
Ben Brusey of Century, the book's UK publisher, is enthused about the release.
"We’re thrilled to be publishing the official Pokémon Book of Joy," Brusey told The Bookseller, "which will undoubtedly be the perfect gift for the Jigglypuff obsessive in your life this autumn. It will be enjoyed by readers of all ages, and will appeal to everyone who grew up with the game the first time, as well as the millions who have fallen in love with the characters since."
According to the official description, The Official Pokemon Book of Joy will be filled with "life-affirming wit and wisdom." It also seems somewhat topical. "At a time when the real world is in desperate need for cheer, these extraordinary creatures offer valuable lessons in belief, courage, friendship, happiness and personal growth,"
"At a time when the real world is in desperate need for cheer, these extraordinary creatures offer valuable lessons in belief, courage, friendship, happiness and personal growth," says the publisher.
There are some weird Pokemon tie-in products, but this might take the cake. At the same time, I'm totally okay with this. 2016 has been kind of rough year, so something like this feels silly and sweet enough to work. A whole book of cute Pokemon with positivity-affirming quotes sounds like it could help a whole lot of people.
I look forward to feeling the power of Poke-positivity next month.
