A father of a little girl and boy, a game developer who is the very heart of his company to his peers and friends, and human being who has been suffering since 2002 due to kidney failure. Steven Alexander is getting his third kidney transplant, and he and his family need help.
Shawn Mills, a close friend of Alexander’s, has started a fundraiser for him, hoping to take some pressure off the family. To him, it would be amazing if the fundraiser reached its goal.
Mills has known Alexander even longer than he’s known his own wife. They met online, and both found friendship through the love of old adventure games. “We started working on a few game ideas, playing around with game development. Since then, we’ve caught up in person half a dozen times.”
“In 2014, we went to GDC in San Francisco. We were promoting our first game to the press for twelve hours a day, then we hit every party and bar we could get ourselves into at night. Steve didn’t drink much, but I certainly showed that Australians can drink,” Mills recalled.
They both then attended an adventure gamers party and talked with like-minded people. “After all that finished in the wee hours of the morning, we just sat around in our hotel bar talking about how amazingly cool it was to be there promoting this game we’d dreamed up years before.”
Now, Alexander and Mills are the co-founders and directors of Infamous Quests, a company that makes point-and-click adventure games. While Alexander also knows how to work with backstory, the characters, and the environment, Mills is an expert on the details and made the stats and combat work in Quest for Infamy.
“Steve loves talking with people and getting to know them,” Mills told CGMagazine. “We wouldn’t have sold half the games we did if Steve wasn’t there every day he could talking with people and building relationships.”
To Mills, donating to the fundraiser would mean so much not only to him but also Alexander’s own family.
“I know how much it took out of them last time, and there was only the two of them,” he said. Now they’re a family with two kids. Simply put, the funding will help them live while they both recover from the transplant.”
