Passport to Horror: Talking to the Orgaziners behind Frightmare in the Falls

Canada’s Largest Horror Con Returns

Passport to Horror: Talking to the Orgaziners behind Frightmare in the Falls 2

Fall is finally here, and with it comes the season of superstition, horror and if you are in the Niagra Region, Frightmare In the Falls.

This yearly event brings all the best and brightest of the horror world to Niagra Falls for fans young and old to enjoy. From celebrity appearances to Q&A’s and other activities, this is one event that can’t be missed if you are a horror or genre fan.

This years con features 50,000 square feet of all things Horror including memorabilia, panels, movies, autographs, displays, and much more. Taking time out of his busy schedule before the con starts, CGM got the chance to talk to James Ponce organizer for Frightmare in the Falls about this year’s con, what fans can expect, and what makes this such a unique experience for genre and horror fans alike.

CGMagazine: How did Fightmare in the falls get started, and what is the history of the con?

James Ponce: Frightmare in the Falls began in early 2017 as an offshoot from another event we run, the Niagara Falls Comic-Con, which features a very successful horror section names the Falls Horror Fest. Both Co-Owner Chris Dabrowski and myself were discussing the success of the horror area and thought to ourselves – why doesn’t Niagara Falls have a horror only event? And Frightmare in the Falls was born.

CGMagazine: Does being in Niagara do for this con, and why the choice of this city over places like Toronto or the surrounding cities?

James: Niagara Falls is a world-famous city and features one of the most world-renowned natural attractions. As two lifelong residents, we wanted to create events that both locals and tourists alike can enjoy.

CGMagazine: What separates FMITF from other horror cons, and what special do you have for fans of the genre?

James: Frightmare is a different atmosphere than most other horror conventions. With the guests and attractions featured, as well as the amazing and unique selection of vendors, there really is no other event like it. We feature interactive photo ops, prop displays, screenings, makeup tutorials and more – we really strive to have a little bit of everything for every horror fan.

CGMagazine: What events do you have planned around the con?

James: The convention itself features over 50 panels, screenings and Q&As. For the nighttime experience, the Official Frightmare After Party takes place Saturday night and features live music by Blood Opera and Chris Alexander, as well as a special performance by First Jason’s Ari Lehman. It’s even got a costume contest and surprise celebrity appearances.

CGMagazine: For anyone on the fence about attending, what should they look forward to for this year’s event?

James: A horror experience like no other. Whether you attend to see costumes, shop the exhibit hall or meet your favourite celebrity guest, there is so much to see and do at the event. There really is nothing else like it in Canada.
