Sonic The Hedgehog Sequel Confirmed for April 2022 Release

Gotta Go Slow

Sonic The Hedgehog actor Ben Schwartz and Paramount Pictures have confirmed the sequel movie is up for a theatrical release on April 8, 2022.

After a welcome reception of the blue hedgehog’s first live-action film, he will be coming back with even more characters while Jeff Fowler is back in the director’s chair. Pat Casey and John Miller are also returning to pen the script, which would likely put Sonic in a new story (possibly with notes taken from the games and Chaos Emerald story arcs).

In a quiet tweet, Schwartz took an airport treadmill past a long movie sign and awkwardly told unsuspecting travellers of his role. He also said hi to himself as Sonic The Hedgehog movie banners continued to follow him.

The sequel was greenlit by Paramount earlier in May 2020, following the first film’s success which also left viewers with a post-credits tease. The set-up paid off for SEGA, who later told Reddit users it put the hedgehog in an experimental spot. Human sheriff James Mardsen was also expected to come back as Tom, while Jim Carrey’s eccentric Dr. Robotnik/Eggman would also return as a villain.

Sonic is the latest character to be hit with a projected post-COVID release date, following the delay of a third Spider-Man film as part of the MCU, Venom 2 and Top Gun: Maverick which have all been pushed back to 2022.
