With the launch of the PlayStation 5 less than two months away, rumours of its complete backward compatibility have been refuted – but that may not mean that PS5 owners will not be able to revist one of the original PlayStation’s most revolutionary hits, Metal Gear Solid.
According to ResetEra user Potterson, Metal Gear Solid may be headed to PC in some form. This notion was backed up by RedGamingTech, who claims Konami’s stealth-action classic will be released on PS5 as well.
Metal Gear Solid has already been remade – in 2004 as Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes on the GameCube. This version included updated graphics (including actual facial expressions) and a re-recorded translation. The update was received well by fans and critics, despite taking a couple stylistic liberties with a beloved classic – like giving Solid Snake some Matrix moves in certain cutscenes.
According to RedGamingTech’s sources, this supposed PS5 version will not simply be a port of Twin Snakes, but a collection including a brand new remake and straight ports of its three sequels: 2001’s Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, 2004’s Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and 2008’s Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
Meanwhile, Gematsu reports that Taiwan’s Digital Game Rating Committee has rated the NES original Metal Gear, Metal Gear Solid, and Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance for PC, alongside Konami Collector’s Series: Castlevania and Contra. Notably, the images associated with each title in the ratings is from their original versions, suggesting that the PC is at least getting ports.
It remains to be seen what shape this collection will take, or how far along the MGS remake is in development, if it exists. What makes these rumours really interesting, is that series creator Hideo Kojima will presumably have no involvement, given his very public falling out from Konami.
[UPDATE 2020/09/25] GoodOldGames is now selling the three Metal Gear games and Konami collection, which explains the Taiwanese rating. Further details on the rumoured PlayStation 5 collection remain to be seen.
