Lucca Comics & Games brings thousands of fans and cosplay lovers to Lucca, Italy. Although they come from all over the world and all love different fandoms, they are all united in their love of nerd culture and the community that the convention provides. Unlike any other convention in the world, Lucca Comics & Games takes over the city, and the medieval town becomes the backdrop for the best possible celebration of all things fandom. With this excitement comes cosplay, as fans find ways to transform themselves into the characters they know and love from their favourite books, comics, manga, anime and video games.
With CGMagazine on the ground at Lucca 2023, we took the time to capture some of the cosplay that stood out and showed what is really possible with a bit of creativity and a love of the subject. It is awe-inspiring to see people from Italy and worldwide demonstrating the possibilities of fandom and how exciting the Lucca Comics & Games Festival truly is. While we can’t capture every amazing cosplay on site, we did our best to document some of the costumes that gave a taste of what people can expect if they are ever lucky enough to attend this groundbreaking celebration of fandom.
Anime & Manga Cosplay
It is truly unimaginable to see the characters you read about in magazines and see walking around every week in your favourite anime, but that is precisely what the fans at Lucca have done. They capture the colourful hair, costumes and personalities. Anime cosplay represents the inclusive community at Lucca Comics & Games, with fans of all ages sharing their love, and it is fantastic to see it all come together in an incredible display unlike any other.
Gaming Cosplay
Lucca brings together a range of people, all with their own fandoms, but one thing is consistent: the joy of making that fictional character a reality, even if only for a few days. Gamers arrive at Lucca Comics & Games dressed as Mario, Link and League of Legends heroes. Their elaborate costumes and props recreate weapons and details from video games. Gaming cosplay shows their passion for bringing their favourite characters to life.
Comic and Movie Cosplay
Comic book and movie cosplay celebrate the creativity of fans at the festival, bringing amazing costumes to the streets of the historic city of Luccs. Comic book and film lovers became Spider-Man, The Avengers, and more. Not only is it fantastic to see the level of creativity, but the sheer amount of ideas captured in the costumes is truly awe-inspiring and one of the most impressive aspects of the Lucca Comics & Games Festival as a whole.
It is impossible to capture every amazing costume fans brought together, especially with over 314,220 people descending on the city, but hopefully, this gives a taste of what to expect should you ever want to attend. Thankfully, the dates for next year’s festival have already been set, so for anyone eager to dive in and experience what is possible at Lucca Comics & Games, it will be taking place in 2024 from Oct 30 to Nov 3.
