Code Vein

Code Vein

Summary

Code Vein is an anime-inspired action RPG that takes heavy inspiration from the notoriously challenging Souls series, while adding its own unique twists. Developed by Bandai Namco, it thrusts you into a post-apocalyptic world overrun by the “Lost” – grotesque, bloodthirsty mutants.

You play as a Revenant, an undead vampire-like being who must consume blood to stave off the frenzy that turns you into one of the Lost. Combat is brutal and unforgiving, demanding patience, precision, and a keen study of enemy patterns. One missed dodge can lead to a swift and brutal demise.

But Code Vein tries to make the brutal Souls formula more approachable with some clever innovations. You can freely swap between unique “Blood Codes” that act as character classes, allowing you to experiment with different playstyles from stealthy assassin to hulking tank. You’re also accompanied by an AI partner who can revive you if you fall.

While the story gets a bit convoluted and the level design lacks the brilliant interconnectivity of a true Souls game, Code Vein still delivers an immensely satisfying challenge for hardcore action RPG fans. Mastering its fast, fluid combat and experimenting with different Blood Code combinations makes for an addictive power fantasy, even if it doesn’t quite reach the masterful heights of its inspirations.
