Frictional Games has announced Amnesia: The Bunker, a new entry in the popular psychological horror franchise.

Amnesia: The Bunker will launch in March 2023 on PlayStation and Xbox consoles, as well as PC via Epic Games Store and Steam. The name comes from the game’s setting, with the story taking place in a desolate WWI bunker. The teaser trailer released shows a fittingly dark and oppressive atmosphere, with the player using some kind of pocket watch or mirror as a light.

Here’s an overview of The Bunker, from a Frictional Games press release.

Players will be in total control of their moment-to-moment decisions. Armed with a revolver gun and a noisy dynamo flashlight, players will walk the course of an ill-lighted WW1 bunker on the shoes of a French soldier troubled by his amnesia and hunted by an otherworldly creature.”

While players do have a revolver, it seems like combat still won’t be a massive focus of Amnesia, as the story setup only gives players a single bullet. That being said, an image on the game’s Steam page does show the player using a grenade to blow up a few dark creatures, so weapons may play more into the puzzle-solving.

The Steam page also provides even more details on The Bunker’s new sandbox approach, so here’s an overview.

RISING TENSION
Immerse yourself in the multiple ways of tackling survival. In the shoes of the French soldier Henri Clément, you are armed with a revolver gun, a noisy dynamo flashlight, and other scarce supplies to scavenge and craft along the way. With randomization and unpredictable behavior, no play-through is the same.

Hunted by an ever-present threat reacting to your every move and sound, you must adapt your play-style to face hell. Every decision will change the outcome of how the game responds. Actions bear consequences.

ESCAPING THE NIGHTMARE
Solve things your own way in a semi-open world. You must explore and experiment to make your way out. Figure out what’s going on down here – what has happened to the other soldiers? Where have all the officers gone? What diabolical nightmare lurks underneath this hellscape? Unravel the mysteries of the Bunker and get to know the nooks and crannies of this cruel sandbox to up your odds of survival.

The Bunker is the fourth game in the Amnesia series. The first game, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and the third game, Amnesia Rebirth, were both made by Frictional Games. The second game, Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs, is an indirect sequel to the first Amnesia and is developed by The Chinese Room. The entire series is currently available on Steam.
