Become the 2017 Nintendo World Champion 1

Dust off your 3DS and start practising, the Nintendo World Championships is returning for 2017. Announced today, the Nintendo World Championship 2017 will begin with qualifiers in August and will continue until the grand finals in New York City in October.

The Nintendo World Championship brings together some of the best players from Canada and the US to compete in various Nintendo games and challenges. The last World Championship included games such as Splatoon, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., and Super Mario Maker.

For those not familiar with the Nintendo World Championship, the tournament takes competitors through a series of different challenges that will test their skills across a wide array of different Nintendo games and scenarios within them. The challenges get increasingly harder and more diverse until only one competitor remains. A trailer for the competition can be seen below.

For the Nintendo World Championships 2017, the qualifying challenge is a time trial in Mario Kart 7 for the Nintendo 3DS. There are two different challenges depending on your age bracket. For competitors under the age of 12, they must pick Mario, the standard kart, standard wheels, and the super glider. They must then try for their best time on the DS Luigi’s Mansion Stage. Meanwhile, competitors age 13 and older have: Bowser, the standard kart, standard wheels, and the super glider. Older competitors will be trying for their best times on GBA Bowser Castle 1.

Qualifiers for the Nintendo World Championship 2017 will be held at select Best Buy locations throughout the United States. While there, competitors can try out demos for Super Mario Odyssey and Metroid: Samus Returns.

The Nintendo World Championship 2017 is open to residents of the United States of America and Canada (excluding Quebec).

The last Nintendo World Championship was held in 2015 and was also where Nintendo revealed the Blast Ball mode from Metroid Prime: Federation Force.
