Time-bending MMORPG and High Fantasy are in no short supply, with Chrono Odyssey gameplay revealed today.
Today South Korean developer NPIXEL released gameplay footage of their highly anticipated massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) Chrono Odyssey. We last saw the title back in 2020, but the developer has now said, “The wait is almost over! Big reveal, coming soon!”
The trailer is jam-packed with action, showing off lots of small and large-scale battles, in which we see plenty of your high fantasy fare. Knights swinging heavy swords, mages throwing spells around, and rangers raining fire with their arrows. It does look like a more action-focused MMORPG than your more queue-based macro-heavy World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy XIV. Chrono Odyssey looks incredibly fluid, and the spells specifically look like they have a lot of weight behind them.
There is also a central game mechanic, the signalling of time. We see this slightly near the end, where a rogue-looking character freezes enemies around them and slashes them, or a knight sneaking around jumps off a ledge to surprise some enemies to rewind their movement. There also seem to be around 20/25 players attacking this giant dragon, but no one is using this time manipulation power, so it is unclear how it will work on a larger scale.
We also get a tease of what the story will be. While still incredibly vague and with no written text or voiceover. There is seemingly a Dark Souls/Lord of the Rings-esque dark knight looking to take over the world. Speaking of the world, that is where you can really see the power of the Unreal Engine 5, putting plenty of sprawling, gorgeous vistas, dense towns, and ancient-looking temples ripe for plundering on display.
While no date was given at the end, we do have the console line-up. Coming to Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and Steam. Chrono Odyssey has coloured me intrigued, but it has big shoes to fill in its claim to redefine the MMORPG experience. In the meantime, wanting to learn more about its time-bending mechanics, we will have to wait a little longer until we know when it will launch.
