Modders and independent developers will soon be getting some powerful new toys.

Crytek has announced that they’ll be releasing an SDK for modders looking to experiment with the CryEngine 3. The SDK will be released in two parts. The first will be an early summer appetizer that will allow modders to build new maps, items, and other content specifically for Crysis 2. Then, in August, the full CryEngine 3 SDK will be released for free. That’s the same SDK the developers used to create Crysis 2, and Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli wants users to “be creative.”

“With all this power in your hands – we know you’re going to do some amazing things with the engine, so we’re working out how best to support you,” said Yerli. “We’ll also be sharing our documentation with you, which is written by the developers of the engine, and we’ll be giving you a new and improved We’ll update the Free CryENGINE SDK regularly, to make sure you have access to all the advancements we make to CryENGINE 3.”

Anyone will be able to use the SDK to make free games or mods, and Crytek says they’ll provide assistance to those looking to license the engine for commercial use.

“If you want to use it to make a game to launch commercially, we’d like to help you with that,” continued Yerli. “If you want to take your product down a traditional commercial route, we will offer an innovative low cost licensing model if you want to release your game digitally.”
