Bungie Is Ending Active Development For Destiny 2, and Shifting the Focus to Marathon

Bungie has announced that it’s officially ending active development of Destiny 2, over eight years after the sequel’s launch.

In a blog post on Bungie.net, the company lays out the sizable amount of final tweaks and updates that will be coming to the game over the next few months. The true final content update, titled “Monument of Triumph,” will arrive on June 9, and allow Guardians to celebrate all of the accopmlishments they’ve had, while delivering “small characters beats” to leave the characters and the overall story in “interesting places.”

“For almost twelve years, we have had the joy and honor to explore the Destiny universe with you all. Through all the ups and downs, surprises and triumphs, building Destiny alongside our players has been a monumental privilege. While our love for Destiny 2 has not changed, it has become clear that after The Final Shape, we have reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2,” Bungie writes in the blog post,

“As our focus turns towards a new beginning for Bungie, we will begin work incubating our next games. To that end, on June 9, 2026, we will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 to begin that new journey as a studio. Though active development may be concluding, we will ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today. Many changes in this final update will aim to ensure that Destiny 2 is a welcoming place for players to return to.”

On that same day, Bungie will release Destiny 2: The Collection, bundling all of the game’s content packs (including Dungeon Keys and the 30th anniversary update) into a single package. Individiaul content packs and expansions will also get permanent markdowns.

This obviously marks a huge shift for the studio, especially in light of Marathon’s launch earlier this year. But there are apparently no plans to immediately move into production on a Destiny 3, according to a new report from Bloomberg, and the studio also plans to make a “signifcant” number of layoffs in tandem with this sunsetting of Destiny 2, according to sources that weren’t authorized to speak to the press.

The report goes on to state that while Bungie is investing more in Marathon’s development, the studio doesn’t have a new project lined up for the Destiny 2 team. Workers are looking to pitch and begin development on a new project, but so far nothiingin has been greenlit, and there’s no guarantee the company will move on with said team at all considering the current state of the video game market.

Destiny 2 launched in 2017, after parting ways with publisher Activision Blizzard. Initial results were quite mixed, but through consistent updating and ambitious expansions, Destiny 2 carved out a strong niche for itself, cultimating, in many ways, with the critically-acclaimed The Final Shape. The most recent update, the Star Wars-themed Renegades, launched earlier this year.

Apparently, there had been some discussion to retool Destiny 2 and make it more approachable for new players, but Bungie opted to shut down development instead in the end.

Destiny 2 is available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
