Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Gets New "Dynamic" Difficulty and Recap Video

Square Enix has released a selection of new info on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, including screenshots, a Story So Far recap, and details on a brand-new difficulty option.

The Story So Far video is a lengthy recap of the events of Final Fantasy 7 Remake narrated by Red XIII, who promises to have a massive role in Rebirth as it will dive into his backstory and home of Cosmo Canyon. It’s a pretty concise recap, but if you’d rather play through yourself Square Enix has a “Twin Pack” on the PS Store that includes both Rebirth and Remake for $69.99.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will see the return of Active and Classic gameplay modes, as well as difficulty options for Easy and Normal. There’s an interesting new addition, however, with the Dynamic difficulty. The description for Dynamic reads, “Enemy difficulty adjusts automatically based on your skill level. Select this if you love the thrill of the fight.”

This seems to suggest that enemies will scale along with the party, keeping up a consistent difficulty level across the experience.

Based on interviews with director Naoki Hamaguchi, we know Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will cover the events from when the party leaves Midgard up through the Forbidden City. A new set of screenshots from Square Enix gives us a look at some of the locations and characters we’ll be seeing along the way. This includes iconic locations like Kalm and the Mythril Mine, along with some minor returning characters like Priscilla from Junon Undercity and Billy from the Chocobo Ranch.

We also get a look at some brand new characters, including the innkeeper at Kalm named Broden, who’s described as “Owner and operator of the Inn at Kalm. He bears a grudge against Shinra, offering to help Cloud and friends escape their would-be corporate captors. His gaunt appearance may be due to his recent bout with an unknown illness.” You can see the screenshots in the gallery below.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launches on February 29 for PlayStation 5. It’s also currently up for the “Most Anticipated” award at this year’s The Game Awards.
