Final Fantasy XVI Will Focus on the "Dark" and "Mysterious" Parts of Clive's Journey

At the PlayStation Partner Awards in Japan, Final Fantasy XVI director Hiroshi Takai gave us the first details on the game’s planned DLC episodes.

Talking to Game Watch and translated by X user @aitaikimochi, Takai says “The two DLC episodes will dive further into the world of FF16, where you can experience the “dark” and “mysterious” parts of Clive’s story. We’ve also added more formidable bosses and battle content that you can enjoy. We hope you look forward to it!”

Past that Takai said detailing specific aspects of the DLC was beyond the scope of what he could talk about.

As for what these DLC episodes could cover, there are certainly a couple of different options. The latter half of the game takes Clive and his friends to the Kingdom of Waloed, a dark and mysterious realm that feels ripe for expansion. However, there’s also a ton of unexplored lore in the game, including “Leviathan the Lost,” the one Eikon that doesn’t appear in the main game but is referenced in codex entries.

Final Fantasy XVI’s DLC was originally announced at a PAX West panel in September, where Square Enix also revealed a free update that added new costumes, weapon cosmetic options, new controller layouts, and more.

Final Fantasy XVI was originally released in June 2023, and was met with mostly positive reviews. Our own review awarded the game a 10/10 saying “Final Fantasy XVI melds the best of the series’ themes with a modern, malleable take on combat—creating a heartrending, generation-defining tale of revenge, fate, and freedom.”

It’s been a big year for Final Fantasy fans, as the next major entry in the franchise is already set to arrive on February 29, 2024, with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

Final Fantasy XVI is currently available on PS5. A PC version is currently in development.
