After surpassing Avengers: Endgame for the biggest box-office opening weekend, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has surpassed the $1 billion global milestone in second place.
In case you haven’t heard, the fourth Tom Holland-starring Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has hit theatres and continues to smash box office records. Brand New Day erupted to a $932 million global box office opening this weekend, surpassing Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame, but this is starting to feel like business as usual for the wall crawler. Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man was the first movie to ever gross over $100 million in its opening weekend back in 2002, and 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home — which fielded all three Spider-Man actors Maguire, Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield — was the highest-grossing movie of that year. It appears history is repeating itself with Spider-Man.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $407 million in North America after four days of release, becoming the fastest film to surpass $400 million domestically, and has earned over $1 billion globally, becoming the second film to accomplish that feat in the second fastest time (six days), only losing in speed by a single day to Avengers: Endgame (who accomplished the feat in five days). The movie also delivered the highest-grossing Monday box office in history with $47 million, according to Variety, besting the Monday watermark set by Black Panther with $40 million.
CGMagazine’s review of Spider-Man: Brand New Day calls it “additional proof why the superhero film genre should continue to thrive now, and for centuries to come,” with critics and audiences alike seeming to like the film overall/ Metacritic boasts a 66% from critics, and an 81% from fans. On forums like Reddit, fans have seemingly enjoyed the film as a form of entertainment, calling it the best Spider-Man film to date.
With Marvel’s return to smashing the box office, the stage is set for Avengers: Doomsday to hit theatres on December 18. Until then, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is still in theatres, so fans can still go see the film if they haven’t already.
