No Word On Who Could Play Kratos Yet

Amazon’s God of War Series Forced to Recast Kratos After Ryan Hurst Suffers On-Set Injury

Prime Video’s live-action God of War series has hit a major snag, as the show will have to recast the starring role of Kratos. Sons of Anarchy actor Ryan Hurst reportedly suffered a major injury while performing a stunt during filming, resulting in a bicep tear.

As reported by TMZ, unfortunately, it’s a serious enough injury that Hurst will be unable to carry on with the project, and the studio will have to find a new actor to play Kratos. Deadline further reports that the injury has put Hurst out of commission for up to six months. This would have pushed filming all the way into 2027, with post-production causing the show to slip even further, resulting in the studio making the decision to recast Kratos entirely. According to Deadline, prep is expected to begin in Mid-August for a mid-October production start. However, four episodes had already been fully completed at the time of the incident, meaning large amounts of the show will need to be entirely reshot.

While God of War didn’t have an announced premiere date, Amazon hasn’t said if the show is still expected to arrive in 2027. When the first photo of the live-action series was released, showing Kratos and Atreus, it quickly became a mocked internet meme. Even God of War creator David Jaffe released a video reaction in which he said, “none of these characters look very interesting or appealing.”

The show comes from writer, executive producer, and showrunner Ronald D. Moore, and already has a two-season order. The cast also includes Callum Vinson as Atreus, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall,  Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri and Danny Woodburn as Brok.

God of War is yet another push in Sony’s hopes for capitalizing on video game adaptations, following in the footsteps of the wildly successful The Last of Us series on HBO, and the less-successful Uncharted film adaptation.

On the video game front, God of War continues to be one of PlayStation’s most successful franchises. The latest entry, God of War Laufey, was announced in June and stars Kratos’s wife Laufey (played by Deborah Ann Woll) in a new action-adventure.
