James Gunn Responds to Huge Media Backlash Over New DCU Plan

Following the leadership change for the DCU—James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-presidents of DC Studios—the fan base has not embraced the changes and James Gunn has responded.

Difficult decisions for the future of DC had to be made when James Gunn and Peter Safran assumed leadership as co-presidents of DC Studios, and the fan base has not embraced the changes enthusiastically…to say the least.

While it’s understandable that there needs to be some changes in the precariously built DC Universe, a full on reboot is not the first thing fans would have expected. While the reboot may actually allow the DCU to prosper, many can’t see a future without Henry Cavill as Superman, who was just recently dropped when the filmmaker announced he would write a new Superman movie that would focus on the hero’s early days, and will not bring back Cavill.

This gave a whiplash to fans who were hoping for Cavill’s return after he appeared in the post-credits scene for Black Adam and announced on social media in the fall that he was officially back as Superman.

James Gunn, particularly, has been under fire from irate fans for the cancellation of Henry Cavill’s Superman comeback and has been quite outspoken about the controversy. Gunn has since responded to the critical remarks on Twitter. In a recent tweet, Gunn addressed a commenter who had referred to his reaction to the news as “cold indifference” and said that it was “Truly CEO role worthy.” In the post he responded:

“I’m anything but cold about it. I sat down in person with Henry yesterday, and we had a very open and honest and respectful discussion. We’ve communicated since and he and I are all good. And I said what I needed to say yesterday, not sure what else you’d like me to say.”

The pressure on Gunn and Saffron to make sure that these “plans” for the future appeal to the audience has only intensified because there are still a huge number of fans who are devastated by the loss of Henry Cavil, who fully personified the role of Superman. Transitions like these frequently take time to take effect, possibly years, and it is uncertain whether the co-heads will be able to win back their fans after they switch to the new DCU. On Monday, Gunn responded to this concern on Twitter, writing:

“We were aware there would be a period of turbulence when we took this gig, and we knew we would sometimes have to make difficult and not-so-obvious choices, especially in the wake of the fractious nature of what came before us,” he posted on behalf of DCU Studios co-CEO Peter Safran and himself.

Other changes that caused controversy among fans included the cancellation of director Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3 and the alleged departure of star Gal Gadot. James Gunn and Peter Safran have yet to definitively confirm that Gal Gadot is no longer Wonder Woman at DC Studios, but they have also not publicly denied that she has been dismissed.

Along with the rumours about Gadot, news regarding the resurgence of the Snyderverse was brought up in an exclusive on Wonder Woman from the Hollywood Reporter, which also brought up the rumour of Jason Mamoa’s departure as Aquaman. James Gunn responded in a heartfelt Twitter Statement stating:

“So. As for the story yesterday in the Hollywood Reporter, some of it is true, some of it is half-true, some of it is not true, & some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not.”

The filmmaker also took to Twitter to disprove a recent rumour that, with the exception of the Task Force X personnel we saw in The Suicide Squad, he and Safran intended to recast every DC character, writing: “I keep seeing posts with this untrue theory. We’re not recasting everyone except The Suicide Squad.” We’re not sure if he means that The Suicide Squad will also have a new cast or if some actors from the previous DCEU era would continue in their roles.

While the plans are still very much in the air, any number of scenarios are reportedly in play, including Momoa possibly returning as a different DC character entirely. Meanwhile, Black Adam 2 may not happen after its lacklustre theatrical showing.

While fans are still speculating on which direction the DCU will head with the new leadership, James Gunn made his priority known to fans: “We know we are not going to make every single person happy every step of the way, but we can promise everything we do is done in the service of the STORY & in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish, and we have cherished our whole lives.”

Whichever way you look at it, the Snyderverse has been the foundation of DC for a while, and with an enormously loyal fan base behind him, but what about the future? And how does the big plan of Gunn and Saffron fit into it? It’s too soon to tell, but the co-heads are reportedly planning to give the head of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav, a copy of their “bible” this week. This suggests that an official announcement may be coming sooner than we think.
